endometrial ablation
Endometrial ablation is a minimally invasive procedure designed to treat heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding by removing the thin layer of tissue lining the uterus (endometrium).
It is typically recommended for women who experience excessive bleeding that hasn’t responded to other treatments and who no longer wish to have children. Endometrial ablation offers an effective alternative to more invasive surgical options like hysterectomy.
Endometrial ablation is usually performed on an outpatient basis and does not require large incisions. Various techniques can be used, including heat, radiofrequency, freezing, or microwave energy, to destroy the endometrial lining. The procedure is often completed within 30 minutes.
A thin, specialised device is inserted through the cervix into the uterus, and the chosen method is applied to remove or damage the endometrial tissue.
Recovery from endometrial ablation is generally quick, with most patients returning home the same day. Some cramping, watery discharge, and light bleeding are common for a few days following the procedure.
Most women can resume light activities within 1 to 2 days, though it’s advised to avoid heavy lifting and vigorous exercise for about a week. Full recovery typically occurs within 2 weeks.
While endometrial ablation is safe and effective for many women, there are some potential risks. These include infection, bleeding, perforation of the uterine wall, and damage to surrounding organs. Some women may experience changes in their menstrual cycle, with lighter or no periods, though in rare cases, symptoms of heavy bleeding may persist.
It’s important to discuss your medical history and any concerns with your consultant to determine if endometrial ablation is the right treatment for you.
