laparoscopic hysterectomy
A laparoscopic hysterectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to remove the uterus. It is often recommended for conditions like fibroids, endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, or certain types of cancer.
Unlike traditional open surgery, a laparoscopic approach uses small incisions, leading to less pain, quicker recovery, and minimal scarring.
During a laparoscopic hysterectomy, the surgeon makes a few small incisions in the abdomen. A thin, flexible tube with a camera (laparoscope) is inserted through one of these incisions, allowing the surgeon to view the internal organs on a screen.
Specialised surgical instruments are inserted through the other incisions to carefully remove the uterus. In some cases, the ovaries and fallopian tubes may also be removed, depending on the patient’s medical condition and treatment plan.
Recovery from a laparoscopic hysterectomy is generally faster compared to open surgery. Most patients can go home the same day or after an overnight stay. It’s normal to experience some abdominal discomfort, fatigue, and light vaginal bleeding in the days following the procedure.
Full recovery typically takes 4 to 6 weeks, although many patients can return to light activities within 1 to 2 weeks. Following your surgeon’s post-operative care advice is essential to ensure proper healing.
As with any surgery, a laparoscopic hysterectomy carries some risks. Potential complications include infection, bleeding, damage to surrounding organs (like the bladder or bowel), and adverse reactions to anaesthesia.
Rarely, a more extensive open surgery may become necessary if complications arise during the procedure. It’s important to discuss any concerns with your consultant and follow all pre- and post-operative instructions to minimise risks.
