ENDOMETRIOSIS
Endometriosis is a long-term condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (endometrium) grows outside the womb. This tissue can grow on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and other areas within the pelvic cavity. Endometriosis can cause pain, inflammation, and in some cases, fertility issues.
The symptoms of endometriosis can vary from mild to severe, and some women may not experience any symptoms at all. Common signs include:
-
Pelvic pain, often worse during periods
-
Heavy or irregular periods
-
Pain during or after sex
-
Painful bowel movements or urination during menstruation
-
Fatigue
-
Bloating or nausea
-
Difficulty getting pregnant
The exact cause of endometriosis is still unknown, but several theories and factors may play a role:
-
Retrograde menstruation: Menstrual blood flows back through the fallopian tubes into the pelvic cavity instead of leaving the body.
-
Genetics: A family history of endometriosis increases the likelihood of developing the condition.
-
Immune system issues: Problems with the immune system may prevent the body from recognising and destroying endometrial-like tissue outside the womb.
-
Hormonal influences: Oestrogen appears to promote the growth of endometrial-like tissue.
Diagnosing endometriosis can be challenging because symptoms overlap with other conditions. Common diagnostic methods include:
-
Pelvic exam: A physical examination to feel for abnormal growths or tenderness.
-
Ultrasound: Imaging to identify cysts associated with endometriosis.
-
MRI: Detailed scans to locate endometrial tissue outside the uterus.
-
Laparoscopy: A minimally invasive surgical procedure to confirm diagnosis and assess the extent of the condition.
Treatment for endometriosis depends on the severity of symptoms, the extent of the condition, and whether you’re planning to have children. Options include:
-
Pain relief: Over-the-counter painkillers or prescription medication.
-
Hormone therapy: Birth control pills, progestin therapy, or gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists to manage symptoms.
-
Surgery: Laparoscopic surgery to remove endometrial tissue and ease symptoms.
-
Fertility treatment: Assisted reproductive technologies like IVF if endometriosis affects fertility.
